The World Health Organization (WHO) raised the influenza pandemic alert for influenza A (H1N1, commonly called "swine flu") from phase 4 to 5 as of April 29, 2009.
Fortunately, WHO claims that the world is now better prepared for a flu outbreak because of measures taken in response to the threat from avian influenza (H5N1.) REMI evaluated the economic impacts of avian influenza in a report showing the benefits of the Raytheon Early Response System in averting a pandemic. We hope and expect that the impacts of influenza will be dramatically lower than that of the avian influenza scenario detailed in this report. However, the study illustrates that the economic implications of a pandemic are large and it also shows the importance of investing in preparedness and prevention measures.
We encourage you to read the study “The State-By-State Economic Effects of an Influenza Pandemic With and Without the Raytheon Early Response System and Mitigation”, written by our founder George I. Treyz, PhD and CEO Frederick R. Treyz, Ph.D with assistance from REMI staff Brendan Russell, Stephen MacLellan, and Katie Servos in 2007.
