Infrastructure is an essential element of local, state, regional, and national economic development. Therefore, planners must consider how the socioeconomic effects will be distributed across all members of the population.

We will be hosting our upcoming Washington, D.C. policy luncheon, “Infrastructure and Socioeconomic Indicators (SEI),” on Thursday, October 28th, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Metro Center.

This two-part discussion will explore infrastructure projects’ socioeconomic and fiscal impacts and their influence on labor markets, the environment, and regional economic growth.

To begin, Riley Durkin will analyze the economic impacts of transit and infrastructure investments in a post-COVID world. Afterward, Peter Evangelakis, Ph.D., and Haozheyi Guan will provide a detailed overview of the economic, equitable, and environmental effects of transit investments using the REMI regional input-output model.

This discussion will explore issues such as:

How does the allocation of transit resources influence employment, income, and other economic factors of every demographic group?

What effects will investments shifts have for our nation’s roads, bridges, railways, and ports?

What are the economic, social, and environmental impacts of transit investments?

How can Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs), Regional Planning Commissions (RPCs), Departments of Transportation (DOTs), and other agencies leverage federal funding to spur economic recovery and growth?

Dr. Peter Evangelakis is Vice President of Economics & Consulting at REMI. Since joining REMI in September 2017, he has managed REMI’s team of economists, contributed to economic modeling software development, served as Principal Investigator on numerous projects, presented multiple presentations, and leads REMI’s consulting practice from our Washington, D.C. office. Dr. Evangelakis holds Ph.D. and Master’s degrees in Economics from University of Chicago and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Mathematics from Swarthmore College.

Haozheyi Guan is an Economic Analyst at REMI. She has provided extensive research, data analysis, and model forecasting to several consulting projects with regional economic and fiscal impact analysis in tax policy and transportation. She also contributes to the development of REMI model’s methodology, conducts econometric analysis to estimate model equations, updates regional economic forecasting data, and provides advisory services and technical support to REMI model users.

Haozheyi holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Beijing Normal University and a Master’s degree in International Economics and Finance from Johns Hopkins University.

Riley Durkin is an Associate at REMI, working to promote the modeling software’s capabilities and providing information to current and prospective clients. Riley is based out of our Washington D.C. Capital office and has built connections with several decision-makers in District and the greater Mid-Atlantic Region. She has contributed to REMI’s outward-facing efforts, including business development and attending conferences on behalf of the company.

Riley earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Economics from Boston University, a graduate of the four-year accelerated dual degree program in economics.
