Populist ideas have captured the hearts and minds of voters. While solutions offered by these movements can be simplistic, the proposals also may reflect valid issues worthy of consideration.
Please join REMI CEO and Chief Economist Frederick Treyz, Ph.D., Managing Economic Associate Chris Judson, and Economic Associate Elliot Jerry for a special seminar, “Populism, Policy Analysis and the Economy,” in Boston, Massachusetts on Friday, March 15th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., when we will examine the most pressing policy controversies during this time of populist fervor.
Economic analysis can serve as a way of exploring populist proposals and shaping them into practical policies. Nonpartisan evaluation of economic impacts can contribute to the dialogue at a time when populism is galvanizing both the right and left.
Our staff will also be joined by guest speaker Igor Linkov, Risk and Decision Science Focus Area Lead for the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, as they address transportation, resiliency, and other economic policy challenges. They will describe how dynamic economic modeling can help cut through the partisan debate and provide nonpartisan analysis.

He is an Adjunct Professor of Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University and Professor of Practice in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Connecticut. Dr. Linkov has managed multiple risk assessments and risk management projects in the areas of environmental management, cybersecurity, critical infrastructure, climate change, and systems vulnerability. He is currently developing resilience assessment and management approaches for infrastructure and cyber systems. As a one of the leaders of the USACE Resilience PDT, he is working on developing the USACE Resilience Roadmap and is part of several Interagency Committees and Working Groups tasked with developing resilience metrics and resilience management approaches. He has published widely on environmental policy, environmental modeling, and risk analysis, including fourteen books and over 250 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters. Dr. Linkov is Society for Risk Analysis Fellow and recipient of 2005 Chauncey Starr Award for exceptional contribution to Risk Analysis and 2014 Outstanding Practitioner Award.

Dr. Treyz oversees the research and development of the REMI model. He collaborated with a team of undergraduates compiling research and data on global business elite networks. He also assisted UMass Prof. Kevin L. Young with research for a conference paper presented at the 2017 Institute for New Economic Thinking Conference.
Mr. Jerry earlier served as an intern at U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s Springfield, MA office, conducting research, assisting with event preparation, and facilitating communication between federal agencies and constituents. He also served as a field organizer for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders’s 2016 presidential campaign in Massachusetts.
Mr. Jerry holds Master of Science in Development Studies from London School of Economics and Political Science and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from UMass Amherst.
